In the landscape of tequila production, blue agave plants are harvested, their piñas (heart-like cores) cooked, crushed, and fermented to extract the liquid that becomes tequila, leaving behind massive amounts of fibrous agricultural waste. With over 321 million litres of tequila exported to the USA annually, Cuemái emerges as a transformative force that places community at the heart of sustainable innovation.
Cuemái is fundamentally a social innovation that empowers communities while championing environmental stewardship. By elevating blue agave remnants from waste to resource, the initiative bridges the gap between tradition and modernity, offering a fresh perspective on sustainability in the textile world.
The project generates new economic opportunities in agriculture and textiles, directly supporting local communities in tequila-producing regions. By introducing a market for agave waste, Cuemái creates pathways for economic development that preserve the cultural heritage of tequila production.
Originally conceived as an MA project, Cuemái was born from a desire to celebrate and authentically represent Mexican culture. Founder Alonso observed how Mexico was becoming a global trend in food, music, and spirits, and wanted to reveal a more genuine narrative that merges Mexican heritage with innovative design.
"My goal is to challenge industries to see waste as opportunity,"

This philosophy transforms the traditional waste management approach—which previously relied on littering, composting, and chemical disposal—into a closed-loop system that maximises resource recovery and minimizes ecological impact.
The textile pieces produced by Cuemái reflect the artistry of Mexico's traditions while offering sustainable solutions. By transforming blue agave waste into fibres, yarns, and fabrics that are versatile and fully biodegradable, the project demonstrates how circular economy principles can create meaningful social and economic impact.
